Discovering Our Self
Dialogue with the Heart … Author Unknown
“What are you afraid of?” the man asked his heart.
The heart didn’t reply.
“There is no one out there that will hurt you, I’ll protect you. I have grown, I am strong now, you have nothing to fear.”
Still the heart did not reply.
“Tell me, heart. Was it our father? Was it our brothers? Was it one of our lovers? None of that matters now, I am grown, no one can do anything to us.”
The heart remained quiet … closed.
The man grew frustrated. “Heart, you are a coward. Maybe you are defective. Maybe I just don’t have a heart that works properly. No wonder I can’t feel love.”
The heart closed even tighter.
For many years the man walked around, falling ever deeper into despair about his defective heart. Then one day the man grew very quiet. Quiet enough that he thought he could almost hear a whisper coming from his heart. He asked with all the compassion he was capable of, “Heart, what are you afraid of?”
The heart whispered back, “You. I’m afraid of you.”
The man cried. He had protected his heart from everyone but the one person that could hurt it the most – the critic within.
Elephants In Captivity
Elephants born in captivity are restrained by a chain that attaches one leg to a metal spike driven into the ground. This prevents them from roaming. They become accustomed to the fact that, as long as the chain and spike are next to them, they are unable to move. As they grow older, their minds become programmed. When they see the spike and chain, they “believe” and accept that they will not be able to move. They become so conditioned that when their owners place a small rope and wooden peg next to them, they make no efforts to step away from it, because they “believe” they are unable to. In truth, their actual power as adults is so great that they could easily pull up a chain and spike of any size. Their programming or “belief,” however, allows this tiny rope and wooden peg to limit their movement.
The Most Direct Path to Fulfillment
Through the consciousness of selflessness we realize, perhaps for the first time as a species, that it is our responsibility to proactively participate in this realignment. Many of us no longer accept our society and it’s ills as a given; and many are becoming proactive, social co-creators and the social potential movement is awakening.
As we gain deeper alignment with the patterns of creation, we sadly see a world that is out of alignment. We see systems are breaking down, causing misery, alienation and violence all around us. This seeming breakdown might be a natural process from the point of view that we are undergoing a birth process…The birth of Venus. Just as the systems of biological organisms, designed for the old phase of development, they seem to be inadequate for this new phase and must re- pattern themselves.
Living Our Powerful Potential
Throughout history, this wrestling with strength and power has been characterized in all cultures which represent the best and worst of what it means to be human. Both of these energies live within each of us, and we are able to respond instantaneously to whatever challenge we are faced with. When we are living in pure awareness and from our center, a connective embodied power arises that unifies all life and such embodiment’s such as facing the dragon, can be heroic in the deepest sense. Yet when we are cut off, even for a moment, we feel numb, we have lost center, we grow powerless and we are consumed with fear of the unknown outcome. (more…)
Discovering Myself
As I string words together, sentence after sentence, my conscious mind slowly gains access to a storehouse of impressions, ideas, memories, and knowledge from my past. From brainstorming, to rough, working, and final drafts, I become aware of what other parts of me already know.
There is a gap between our thoughts…..a delay between the arrival of new thoughts (or feelings), and our conscious awareness of them. Before a thought/feeling becomes fully conscious, we may only sense it through elusive moods, or physical symptoms. If we don’t take the time to contemplate (sitting quietly, talking to a good listener, or journaling) the thought/feeling may never come to consciousness. We then can’t retrieve the information, and if the thoughts/feelings are a trigger for us, we may react without ever knowing why.
The Present Moment
“For those who have found the still point of entry, around which all –including themselves – revolves, everything is acceptable as it is, indeed, can be experienced as glorious and wonderful.”
Joseph Campbell
ANXIETY AND FEAR are the stuff of the mind about what might or might not happen in future, even if the future is one hour from now. The present moment does not create such emotions and there is no other reality than the present moment. We cannot go to the store to buy something yesterday. Nor can we go now to buy something tomorrow. WE CANNOT act in the past or in the future. We can only act in the present. Only in the present can we make decisions or respond to events or challenges. Only in the present can we exercise our free will to change our lives. The only point of power to create and change our lives is the present moment. There never was a time that was not NOW. There is no other time.
