Awakening and Ripening
Spring is the season for renewal, we all know that if we keep fruits and vegetables covered too long, they ferment and rot. Often, we follow this same pattern of nature, if we stay stuck in old plans, once who we are has matured and ripened, we can begin to spoil within.
Spring is the time to uncover ourselves from the layers that have helped us to grow and free ourselves to blossom and ripen anew.
I do a lot of container gardening, and sitting here today planning my garden, it occurred to me that most things in life require a protective container in order to grow. For example, vegetables and fruit grow with a covering we call skin, to protect the sweet ripe fruit within. Perhaps, we as humans do this too. We protect our seeds of dreams, desires and passions by wrapping them in the busyness of our daily ambitions and grandiose plans that have nothing really to do with the sweetness and ripeness that already exists within us.
Sitting here smiling, I’m reflecting on how many goals and dreams I have incubated in my own container, all the hours I have spent weaving my dreams into stories I would tell myself. Some never came to the fruition I had hoped for, until like the weeds in the garden, they covered my heart. I worked for years covering my own wounds of esteem and the ups and downs of my own accomplishments; till my heart was covered over with only my perceived achievements.
It was only when I laid aside my achievements did the light begin to enter. The light will never force itself into our hearts. It is very patient and seems to wait for us to open enough of a crack so the light can enter, filling whatever space we have been able to weed out within our self.
None of our plans and goals can prepare us for the moment when we ripen; what we can do is try not to define ourselves by all the layers covering us. When we are ripe within, our soul fills out like a mature peach. Once ripened we are able to feel compassion and joy, underneath the soft warm fuzzy covering of the stories we got used to telling ourselves, for nothing matters to the peach except the sweetness within.
There comes a moment when our endless dreams and goals have served their purpose. A time when we have experienced the darkness of the cave or the solstice and solitude of a long winter. Just like the peach we realize that we are full enough, a rejuvenated sweetness seemingly incubated within us. The sun rays now bursting us forward into Spring, and in the ripeness of renewal we set our self free in the mist of this great transformation.
