History of Blogging

The journey of the word “Blog” comes from 3 generations, “Weblog”. “We blog”, “Blog”. The blog started as “Weblog” on December 17, 1997, by Jorn Barger.

Weblog broken as we blog on April or May 1999 by Peter Merholz used the term “blog” and it became popular.

The popular blogging platform “Blogger.com” launched in 1999 at Pyra Labs by Evan Williams and later acquired by Google in 2003.

Blogging started during the early year of the 90s. Mosaic Communications Corporation created a website called “What’s New” to update a list of new websites on June 14, 1993.

Ty, Inc, an American Multinational Company created a blog in a section called “Online Diary” in 1995.

Justin Hall began personal blogging in 1994 when he was a student at Swarthmore College. Justin Hall both are known as the earlier bloggers.

The self-hosted blogging platform “WordPress” released on May 27, 2003.

Blog vs Website

Many people have heard the word “Website”, but very few people have heard the word “Blog”. Both are same or different? Let’s clarify it.

A blog is a part of the website and it can be a website but a website can not be a blog.

In a Blog, contents/articles are organized by categories and tags. But on a website, contents organized through static pages to display their information.

Blogs are updated frequently with new articles and organized in chronological order (newest posts displays first). But websites are not updated frequently.

To know better let’s see an example:

Envira Gallery is a website that sells Premium WordPress Gallery Plugin. Here is the view of the website. It has a lot of pages such as pricing, features, demos, blogs, contacts, login, and Get Envira.

This is all a showcase of this website, in which the website tells about its product (Envira Gallery). The pricing page to show is the price of the product, the demo page to show the product demo.

There are many more pages to share information about the business and pages.

Along with those pages, it has also a blog page to provide its product-related information to its customers and audiences. This page helps the audience to buy its product.

Corporate businesses, Brands, Non-profit organizations, Governments, etc. have pages on their website. Through this page, they give more information to the audience about their products and services.

Types of Blogs

Personal: Personal blogs are like online diaries. These are written by anyone who wants to share his ideas, opinions with the people.

Mostly these are maintained by an individual person. Persons like popular celebrities, businessmen, sportspersons, or famous personalities use personal blogs.

Collaborative: Blogs are written by more than one author called Collaborative or group blogs. It’s a multi-author blog. These are written on a specific topic on a regular basis by a group of authors.

Micro Blog: Written on a small piece topic known as MicroBlog. Social media like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr are popular platforms for Microblogging.

With a Microblog, you can create a good interaction with your audiences. Microblogging is the best way to improve audience engagement.

Corporate or Organizational: Written by any corporate business or non-profit organization is called Corporate or Organizational Blog. These are used to give information about the Products/services of the business or organizations.

How the structure of a blog?

The structure of a blog changes from time to time. But it has a basic structure, as below:

Homepage Structure
  • A header at the top containing the name/logo.
  • Navigation or Menu Bar with Header. Some Menu bars located below the header.
  • A search bar with a Navigation menu.
  • The main area below the header with recently published posts in chronological order.
  • Sidebar: Sidebar on the left or right side/Both sides.
  • Footer area below the main area. The area contains widgets, relevant links/pages/copyright.
Single page/Single post Structure
  • A header at the top containing name/logo.
  • Navigation or Menu Bar with Header.
  • A search bar with a Navigation menu.
  • Single content/page content in the main area.
  • Sidebar on the left or right side/both sides.
  • Author profile showing author information below the single post.
  • Comment section showing comments posted by the readers.
  • Footer area below the main area. The area contains widgets, relevant links/pages/copyright.

Who can start a blog?

An individual person or group of persons who want to share his idea, knowledge, or opinion on a particular topic can start a blog.

There are many topics in which a person can start his blogging career. Topics such as product reviews, lifestyle, news, stories, teaching, motivation, cooking, etc.
