True and Equal Justice For All

Posted: September 29, 2018 Author: Christina Reeves

Prejudice is a form of untruthfulness; and untruthfulness is an insidious form of injustice.

As individuals we tend to understand ourselves, and to explain our actions to others, in ways that are self-justifying. We try to present ourselves in a good light, as if to recruit others to personal supporters. The same thing happens at a societal scale. The dominant ideology always favors beliefs and behavior of the people in that society and often based on falsehoods. It is false to think that elitists societies which stigmatize a large portion of the population as inferior according to genetic differences or ethnic backgrounds is capable of true and equal justice for all.

The assumption that today’s modern societies are a direct expression of human nature reflects a remarkable ignorance of the fact that throughout history humanity has existed as “anatomically modern” living in remarkably egalitarian societies with little or no sign of differences of in equality.

What is crucial is whether we find ourselves in a world in which we depend on cooperation or in a world where we have people appear supremely important and others almost worthless, in which we feel our outward wealth is taken as the marker of our inner worth and we all become highly sensitive to being put down and disrespected. Inequality brings us the worst in our society and our justice system.

Perhaps as we become more aware of the forces which shape human social behavior and the key role of inequality, we might realize that we have, as never before, the possibility of creating a society better for all of us.

….Love and Light, Christina
